An Excellent Surgery

Dear family and friends,

Thank you for your prayers for Amos. We have received countless messages in the last 36 hours from people all over the world who love Amos and are interceding with the Lord on his behalf. God has heard our prayers.

It’s been a long day already, but the short version is that the surgery took about three hours and went very well. In fact, the surgeon said it went even better than he expected. We are thrilled with the news and praising God.

Around 1:00pm we were reunited with Amos in the PICU as he started waking up. When we arrived in the room he had already had his breathing tubes and other items removed. Over the last hour and a half he has been waking up beautifully, at first cracking open his eyes, and then starting to groggy-whisper-talk with us. Everything seems to be moving well (limbs, eyes, tongue, etc.) and he is in little pain at the moment and is not nauseous. For about fifteen minutes he was playing a word association card game with Kelli, and his answers included things like Star Wars, farts, and Calvin & Hobbes — so he’s very much himself! Even as I wrote this update the nurses removed his oxygen mask and are getting ready to give him something to eat and drink soon (he’s hungry!).

Needless to say we are thrilled with this outcome. How different it is from his initial surgery in June 2015, when his surgery left him paralyzed for many weeks. We have been praying for an excellent surgery and an “easy” wake-up, and the Lord has heard us.

The plan for today is for him to simply rest. He will get a CT scan later to make sure everything looks okay in his brain (e.g., no bleeding etc.). Tomorrow, Amos will have an MRI that will give us much more detailed information about the surgery results.

Please pray:

  • For Amos to be in minimal pain and have minimal nausea
  • For an easy and positive CT scan today
  • For a very good night of rest for Amos (and mom and dad!)
  • For excellent results in the MRI tomorrow

Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our sheild. For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. (Psalm 33:20-21)
