Late November MRI Results: Clear

Dear friends and family,

Amos and I arrived in California on Saturday night and have had an active few days since then. Thank you for praying for us, particularly with the ridiculous amount of travel I’ve been doing with attending conferences on the east coast last week.

Stoma Closure Cancelled

2017-11-28 17.06.07The first morning Amos was scheduled to have the tracheostomy site (the “stoma”) surgically closed. This isn’t just a cosmetic issue. At times we can still hear air escaping through the site, which means that it has not yet fully closed up itself. Whatever degree it remains unsealed is pretty small, however, as Amos can fully submerge the area in water up to his chin without any “leaking” problems. Strange. Hence the surgery.

For various reasons, however, our Ear/Nose/Throat doctor decided against the procedure at the last moment. He had done a full laryngoscopy on Amos as a preliminary step, and while doing that decided that Amos’s airway is not quite in the condition he wanted before sealing the stoma. This is the doctor who placed Amos’s trach in the beginning, has overseen his care and was the man who removed it back in May, and has several dozen years’ experience. So although the decision to not do the surgery was a surprise, we completely trust his judgment. We’ll revisit this again in time.

MRI Results Clear

Much more importantly, Amos had his MRI yesterday morning. I received a phone call late last night with the wonderful news that everything is clear and stable. Praise God!

Not only that, but Amos’s medical team here in CA now feels we can slow down the pace of these scans. For 2018 Amos and I will be making trips every four months instead of every two, which makes a massive difference (especially when one is attempting to finish a PhD at Cambridge).

Thanking God for 2017

Kelli and I are so very thankful for everyone who so consistently prays for us, especially for Amos. I can’t tell you how many people I come across – some who I’ve never met before – who keep up with Amos’s progress and tell me they’re praying. God hears us.

Last night while we were out for dinner with Gigi and Grandpa here in California, we came across the surfboard in the picture above. Not only does it combine two of my favorite things – surfing and Hebrew – but the Hebrew very appropriately says:

Fear not, for I am with you

Amen. May we all continue to trust in Him this Advent season, and into the new year.

    Thanks be to God for all his mercies! May they continue in your lives and ours.

    Even though it means seeing Gigi and Grandpa less often, what a great relief to be flying back and forth only half as often. May the ‘tween times soon lengthen into … life.
